Why Get Chin Implants
The main purpose of chin implant surgery is to build a better profile, and/or to eliminate the “chin-less” look. As a matter of fact, an enhanced chin can sometimes eliminate the need for rhinoplasty (nose job) because the results of this remarkable procedure brings much needed balance to the face.
Process of Surgery
Chin surgery is usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or plastic surgeon and the procedure takes between thirty minutes to one hour. An x-ray is taken of the face and chin to determine the best course of action (incision inside the mouth or under the chin) and size of the implant to be used. When going in for surgery, the doctor may choose to either put the patient under general anesthesia or simply use numbing medication. This decision is based on how complex the procedure is and the comfort level of the patient.
Recovery
After surgery, the patient usually experiences soreness for one to two weeks, with medication being prescribed to control the discomfort. The swelling can last up to 8 weeks, and the patient will most likely be required to wear a brace when going to sleep for 4-6 weeks after the surgery. Depending on the capacity of the procedure, the doctor may allow the patient to partake in light activity just a couple of days after surgery and permission to go back to work 7-10 thereafter.
Side Effects
The side effects, like any cosmetic procedure, will vary depending on the scope of the surgery and the tolerance of the patient. The most commons ones are bruising and swelling, while in extreme cases, blood clots or infection may develop. A follow up consultation is scheduled a few days the surgery is performed to make sure no serious side effects arise.
Costs
Chin Implant surgery can be both cosmetic and/or reconstructive. If reconstructive, your insurance company may cover some or all of the costs associated with your surgery, however, insurance will not cover the cost, if it is purely for cosmetic reasons. The costs include the surgeon’s fee, anesthesiology, the implant and operating room fees and they start at $2600, depending on the geographic location of the operation.
