Knee Replacement Surgery

There are two types of Knee implants or replacements: A total knee replacement and a partial replacement.

In a partial knee replacement one or two the the three knee areas need to be replaced: the patella (Kneecap), the medial side (closer to the mid line of the body) and or the lateral side. Its best to retain as much of your own natural knee as possible by only replacing the damaged areas.

During a total knee replacement the surgery resurfaces the tibia and the femur with an implant. The top of your shinbone is resurfaced with a metal tray or bearing and topped with a plastic spacer. This plastic replaces the damaged or worn out cartilage, providing a new smooth surface. The area at the bottom of your thighbone is resurfaced with a rounded metal part. The kneecap can also be replaced with a plastic.

Knee replacement or implant success depends on age, weight, activity level, and other health factors. There are risks and sometimes long recovery times. Only after a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon can you know if knee replacement is the right choice or option for you.

COSTS

Knee replacement surgery can cost up to $35,000 and more.  Typically clinics give a discounted price for individuals with no insurance. You could expect to pay from $20,000 to $29,000 if you have no insurance.

Additional / Optional Costs:

Knee surgery comes with minor preparations to your living area to increase your chances at a full and speedy recovery. These include safety bars in the shower or bath, a stable shower bench, a toilet seat riser with arms, etc…

Recovery Time:

Depending on the type of knee surgery: the average recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks to be able to walk unassisted.  In usual cases, first steps are taken by a walker or cane.

Implants usually need to be replaced in 10 to 15 years.
