Why Gummy Bear Implants Are Gaining In Popularity
It’s no secret that breast augmentation remains the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in the world. For a long time, patients seeking breast implants had only 2 options: silicone or saline. In 2013, however, the FDA approved the “Gummy Bear” breast implants in the United States. While the “gummy bear,” which is also made out of silicone, is not a medical term, the catchy nickname for the cohesive gel implants has become marketing gold.
Advantage Of Gummy Bear Over Traditional Silicone and Saline Implants
The reason they are called gummy bear is because, like the candy, the gel inside the implant is dense and doesn’t leak, even when cut in half and squeezed. The tear-drop shape of the implant, full on the bottom and tapered on top, shapes the breast firmly, giving a fuller and rounder look. The gel in these anatomically shaped implants, unlike previous ones, doesn’t move around. So it remains the same shape whether the patient is standing up or laying down, giving them a more natural look and feel. There also is no “ripple effect” because of the firmness of gummy implants and they don’t wrinkle.
Possible Disadvantages Of Gummy Bear Implants
While these implants give women another choice, they are not ideal for everyone. Patients that have thin breast tissue or sagging breasts are not considered good candidates for gummy bear implants because it’s firmness makes them look unnatural. That thickness also requires a bigger incision than traditional implants, although a good surgeon will insert under the breast, making the scar less visible. Also, while it’s considered a rarity since it happens in less than 3% of all surgeries, it’s important to point out that there’s a possibility that these implants can rotate, giving the breast a different shape. Most of the time, however, the implant can be manually manipulated back into shape.
Cost Of Gummy Bear Implants
The material of gummy bear implants is costlier than traditional implants, making the procedure slightly more expensive. The cost differs based on where you live and the plastic surgeons in your area. As with any cosmetic procedure, contact us for a doctor referral.
