Why do you snore?
Snoring Implants
Snoring refers to the snorting or rattling sound that is produced during the inhalation and exhalation as one sleeps. The noise originates from the soft palate and the tissue within the mouth or nose as well as due to the vibrations of the throat.
Some individuals snore occasionally and the sound they produce is not significantly loud while on the other hand some people snore quite often and the sound that is produces by them is loud enough to be heard in the vicinity.
Snoring implants is easy, safe and effective; and have specifically been designed to address the issue of snoring. The muscles surrounding the upper region of the air passage relax during sleep. A narrow airway will cause air turbulence which will in turn produce vibrations in the soft tissues of the oropharynx thus generating the snoring sound when one breathes.
The precise origin of the noise varies from one person to another. Snoring could not only disturb the sleep pattern of the patient but also their bed and/or room partner. Snoring is known have an adverse effect on relationships. This procedure is also used for treatment of patients with complex snoring problems wherever the soft palate is involved. It is also recommended for the patients if the snoring problem persists and does not improve by conservative treatment.
The pillar implant is a surgical procedure meant to alleviate habitual snoring and to treat mild to moderate obstructive apnea, a serious disorder in which breathing is interrupted repeatedly throughout sleep. Both snoring and obstructive apnea can be caused by the relaxation of the muscles at the back of your throat. The Pillar Procedure is a globally accepted treatment method for apnea disorder. During the procedure, little woven implants are placed within the soft palate thus stiffening the surface and reducing the vibration which will cause snoring.
Following measures are useful to stop snoring.
Avoid alcohol before going to bed. Alcohol causes the muscles to relax a bit too much during standard night’s sleep. This further relaxation of the muscles causes the back of the throat to collapse which then causes snoring. Keep your nasal passages clean so as to enable yourself to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. If an allergic reaction is obstructing your nose, immediately take prescribed tablets or a nasal spray. Ask your pharmacist to recommend one for you. Cigarette smoke irritates the inner lining of the cavity and throat inflicting swelling and inflammation upon them. If the nasal passages become full it is hard to breathe through your nose. Therefore quit smoking. Try and sleep on your side instead of sleeping on your back. When you are sleeping on your back the chest exerts pressure on respiratory system that will induce snoring so, it is better to lie down on any of your sides i.e. right or left rather than on the back.
Additional common Snoring Causes include: (but not limited to):
– Allergens
– Narrow / blocked nasal passages
– Overtired
– Dehydration
– Sleep Position
– Alcohol Consumption
– Weight Gain
– Aleep Apnea (high BP / Heart Disease)
– Sleep Medication
– Enlarged Tonsils
– Bronchial Constriction
– Deviated Septum
– Smoking
Snoring Treatments:
Non surgical treatments are basically lifestyle changes. Losing weight, changing sleep positions, stopping smoking, stopping drinking, adding a humidifier, getting rid of possible allergens in your room.
When typical adjustments don’t work, you should seek medical advice. Although most snoring causes are not serious, sleep apnea can be life threatening.
Surgical snoring treatments are rare, however, when all else has failed it may be necessary to remove excess skin, tonsils, enlarge nasal airways, septoplasty or implanting cylinders into the soft palate to strengthen it and prevent vibration.
